Tuscany Landscapes

These pictures show two very different types of countryside in Tuscany. The first is from the Chianti Colli Fiorentini south of Florence while the second is the rolling hills near Livorno on the Tuscan coast.

Both were taken with the Pano app for iPhone.

Arezzo: A Tuscan Town For All Seasons

aperitivo in arezzo

Because of its slightly less exalted status amongst the general visitor to Tuscany, prices in Arezzo are much more reasonable than some other places. In Summer 2010, I had an aperitivo: glass of Campari & soda and food from the bar buffet for €4, a price unheard of in Florence. Not only was it reasonable but we sat on a prime table in a Piazza watching the people go by! You'll need to hurry and get here before it's too late but in the meantime, have a look at these two videos:

Florence Duomo From Afar

Last Sunday was a gorgeous day so I took a stroll up into the hills south of Florence. It was the perfect opportunity to get some photos of the Duomo which has dominated the skyline of Florence for over 500 years.

David On The Duomo

David-on-the-duomo-2

Today, a replica of Michelangelo's David was raised onto the Duomo in the centre of Florence. Weighing in at 400kgs and standing at over 5 metres tall, the copy was commissioned as part of the Florens 2010  event. Over 4 days, the statue will move around key areas of the city after spending a day and night in the position that was originally planned for the statue when it was commissioned in 1464

You can also see my short video of David On The Duomo

Autumn in Florence

Autumn in Florence is great for many reasons but towards the end of October, it can start to get a bit chilly. To keep you warm , it's good to do some exercise so I've put together my three favourite (reasonably) active videos to get the blood flowing. We've got an autumn walk along the Arno, a dawn stroll through the centre of Florence and a day cycling through the hills of Chianti.

Ferrara: Classic Porsche, Mercedes Benz (and a Vespa or 2)

The classic car event that ran in Ferrara, Emilia Romagna last September was a great opportunity to get some video - the site was still pretty new then so I was like a kid with a new toy - with all the vintage automobiles in a great setting.

If Red Means "Stop", What Does Two Reds Mean?

Spotted this weekend in the middle of Chianti, this traffic light sums up the confusion and bafflement that many visitors to Italy discover on the roads. In this case, how can two reds be more persuasive than one. What does it mean? Perhaps " OK, seriously, you have to stop now. I mean it this time. I won't tell you again. Do I have to get your father etc."?

Furthermore, if there are two reds but you only have one red light illuminated what does that mean? Talk about a lack of clarity. In the rest of the world (as far as I am aware) the traffic light system is pretty well-understood, if not wholly obeyed. This just muddies the waters. And does this signal the start of a kind of "red light arms race" where the number of reds lights symbolises the strength of the obligation to stop? That could get messy.
Looking at the picture, I've just noticed there's a stop sign there for good measure.

Sarzana, Liguria - a great (and unusual) day trip from Florence

Two weekends ago, we went out of Tuscany to visit some friends in Liguria. They live in Sarzana which is a lovely walled town and small enough to see on a day trip. You can watch the video of Sarzana on the FlipFlorence main site.

The Gemmi cafe is in the centre of town and has great pastries as well as good coffee (of course!) Sarzana can be teamed up with half a day at the beach. After lunch we drove down the coast as resorts like Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio are not too far away (about 30 and 40km respectively)
